I remember clearly the first dessert she ever made me - a molten lava cake for my bday. It was during recess, we were huddled around the dull green canteen table, gazing intently as the knife made its incision. Chocolate didn’t rly flow out as advertised (which she insisted was because too much time has passed since baking), and the cake tasted like your average brownie, but I loved it all the same. No one outside of my fam has ever baked anything for my sake, and the thought that i was worth making an effort for had me overjoyed.
That was just the beginning. What started out as premixed easybake cookies and pseudo-molten lava brownies quickly evolved into full blown cakes and carefully crafted entremets over the years. Whenever the holidays rolled around, I’d grab the chance to pester her for festive desserts. She always delivered. We churned out mooncakes for mid autumn, carved pumpkins for halloween, constructed ginger bread houses for christmas, baked themed cookies for game launch-days… The list goes on. “Ask and you shall receive (one day or another)”- a tacit agreement between us. Safe to say, I’ve tasted almost every one of her creations.
Of course, not every one of her ambitious projects worked out. There were bound to be kitchen disasters and baking mishaps. I’ve stomached my fair share of her failed experiments, chewing through soggy waterlogged sponge cakes and swallowing impossible combinations of food. Like, girl, in what world did coconut cream lime pumpkin or pumpkin cream cheese orange rum sound like a good idea? Still, I ate just about anything she served me. If baking was her love language, trusting in her to not poison me and licking the plate clean was mine.
Im not even sure why I’m writing all this. (feeling sentimental, might delete later lol) Maybe i just wanna confess my love and appreciation (for the food), or maybe its all an elaborate ploy to beg for more. What I do know is that I’ve been a fan since that first non-molten brownie more than a decade ago. Work might be overwhelming and things might be looking bleak, but do know that you’ll always be my fav shef and I your loyal dumpster.
Anyway, keep the cakes coming hun :)
